Our literacy block includes reading workshop, writing workshop, and word study. Daily, students spend time growing in all three areas. Students engage in a focus lesson, followed by guided, shared, and/or independent practice. Lessons are completed with reflection and time to share.
Reading Workshop
Every day, students receive a mini-lesson focused on a specific reading strategy. They then daily read silently to themselves from the many books in our classroom library. Students also are given choice in other literacy rich and individualized activities to engage in daily. These activities include:
Read to Self: Students do this every day. They each have a book bin with several books that are at their "just right" reading level. Students get to exchange books in and out of their book bin as often as they would like or need to always have a variety of amazing books to read!
Read to someone: Students often love this option! While reading to a classmate, students are focusing on fluency, accuracy and comprehension.
Listen to Reading: We have classroom laptops and iPads where students will have the choice to listen to books. Students love reading from TumbleBooks and PebbleGo.
Writing Workshop
Students will receive a mini-lesson daily in the area of writing we are currently focusing on and will then have time to go and practice the specific skill. We share and reflect on our writing at the end of our lessons daily as well. Students will experience a variety of styles of writing. They will focus on telling stories, expanding stories they write, sharing opinions and researching.
Word Study
Students will work on phonics, word recognition, vocabulary and word structure. They will use several strategies to focus on high frequency words, spelling patterns and rules. Other areas of focus include parts of speech, root words, understanding syllables and decoding words.
